Valorisatie van lignine-biomassa tot competitieve componenten ter geleidelijke vervanging van BPA in de formulering van epoxyharsen

Bisfenol A (BPA) is een chemische stof die elk jaar in grote hoeveelheden over de hele wereld wordt geproduceerd. Het wordt gebruikt bij de productie van epoxyharsen en polycarbonaten. De hormoonverstorende eigenschappen en de fossiele samenstelling doen echter vragen rijzen over de milieueffecten en de toxiciteit voor de gezondheid, alsook over de duurzaamheid van deze stof.

Het VIABLE-project is er daarom op gericht de duurzaamheid en het milieueffect van de productie van epoxyharsen te verbeteren door het BPA-gehalte in de formulering van epoxyharsen met 20 tot 50% te verlagen.

🔦 This month, we put the light on CRF, based in Italy

CRF is a research and innovation centre, part of Stellantis.
They will demonstrate the feasibility of the car components.
They developp a car part (the roof). With the LIFE-VIABLE solution, other parts can also be considered.

Fifth meeting with all VIABLE partners

📢 As you can see, we recently met for our fifth consortium meeting!

It was also a great opportunity to visit Westlake Epoxy's facilities in Duisburg (Germany) where the epoxy resin will be made ⚗

Almost halfway through the LIFE-VIABLE project, we discussed the latest results and those to come.

Project Partners

VITO (BE) - Flemish Institute for Technological Research, a leading EU research and technology organisation  will coordinate the project. Through their pilot plant, VITO will ensure the depolymerisation of lignin, the fractionation and the supply of biobased alternatives for BPA to Solvay.


Apesa, partner of Viable Project

APESA (FR) - a technological centre specialised in environmental assessment - will be in charge of monitoring the different impacts of the project.


CIMV, partner of Viable Project

CIMV (FR)  - a SME with more than 20 years of experience in lignin valorisation - will provide its expertise in lignin reactivity and will produce organosolv lignin.


HP Composites, partner of Viable Project

HP composites (IT)-  a manufacturer of composites components for several markets - will integrate the new epoxy resins in composites for both aesthetic and structural car parts. Their role in the project will range from design to final homologation of the car components


Polymeris, partner of Viable Project

Dissemination and valorization of the results will be performed by Polymeris (FR), a cluster with a large EU network in the field of polymers and composites for various industrial sectors.


Solvay, partner of Viable Project

SOLVAY (UK) - a global manufacturer of materials and chemicals is a key producer of epoxy resins in Europe - will produce in operational environment the lignin-based epoxy resins.


Stellantis, partner of Viable Project

CRF (IT) - a research and innovation centre of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles - will demonstrate the feasibility of these car components


Westlake Epoxy (NL) - productie en marketing van epoxyharsen voor meer dan 50 jaar. Zij zullen de opschaling van de epoxyharsproductie binnen het project beheren.
